Preparation for my second interview
I interviewed another international student from Bangladesh. My interviewee was Anushree Patel, a 21 years old female that lived in the St. Cloud for 3 years. I was introduced to her by one of my classmates in Math 070 class. At the beginning of the interview I tried as much as I can to set the communication level to casual. Yet my interviewee seemed shy and to a limit uncooperative since I offered to . She was a nice lady but I think she was a bit nervous of me and she also said that she had an appointment that she didn’t want to be late for. but luckily I managed to make here comfortable.
Time and location of the interview
the interview took place on March 20th, 2011 in Caribou cafe around 3p.m.
My transcript for my second interview
Ibrahim- hi, how are you doing ?
Anushree- I’m fine thank you
Ibrahim- my name is Ibrahim alsgoor and I will conducting an interview with you as an international student
Anushree- nice to meet, I’m Anushree
Ibrahim- very nice to meet you Anushree. I was wondering if I can record the interview ?
Anushree – why do you wanna record it ?
Ibrahim- it’s just for the professor’s archive, it’s nothing serious
Anushree- you can record it
Ibrahim- thank you, so how was your day ? enjoying the warm weather ?
Anushree It was fine, it is a nice day

Anushree- About 3 years
Ibrahim-Do you like it here ?
Anushree- It’s not that bad
Ibrahim- What are you studying ?
Anushree- I’m majoring in Finance
Ibrahim- Cool, me too, so do you think it would be easy to find a job after you graduate?
Anushree- being an international student it’s hard to find a job. I’ve applied to internship and got rejected. Apparently American citizens have advantage more than internationals from what I saw and heard.
Ibrahim- What was the hardest thing about transitioning to the US? ( culture shock )
Anushree- I did not find and problem adjusting since the people here are nice, I think my adaptation process was smooth in general. I did get some harassments when I was in high school but other than that it was good
Ibrahim- most of the international I know did have a bit of a problem but I’m
glad you didn’t have to .So Why did you decide to come to SCSU instead of working or studying in your own country?
Anushree- I came here when I was 12 years old with my parents and since my parents were staying close to this town so i decide to move to Saint cloud. Being here with my parents is probably the reason why I didn’t have any adaptation problems,
Ibrahim- It could be. Speaking of which, what are some of the cultural differences between your country and the US?
Anushree- one of the biggest differences is maintaining eye contact. it is very important in USA compared to Bangladesh. usually people feel really awkward when the speaker is staring into the eyes of the person where is in the united states it’s the other way around.
Ibrahim- I actually heard the same thing from my last interviewee. Throughout your years in the US, have you had any personal experiences with racism?
Anushree- I have myself experienced racism when i was in high school by a
fellow American, It wasn’t a serious and is expected from younger people. It didn’t go any further beyond calling names which one of my teachers took care and punished those who are responsible.

Ibrahim- Good to know that. I would assume that you had you preconceptions about the US before coming here, did you ?
Anushree- As seen in movies was what i did not experience after coming here. Movies showed me If I my say an Ideal America and it turned out to be different than that
Ibrahim- I would think that the American diet is one of the differences, what do you think of it ?
Anushree- American diet has a lot of fast food and eating fast food is not what I would expect every day. For me I love spicy food and I prefer our cooking very much
Ibrahim- I like the Bangladeshian food and I don’t blame you for loving it.
Anushree- I’m glad you do
Ibrahim- so I was wondering how do you take care of yourself financially regarding self expenses, tuitions and housing ?
Anushree- My parnets take care of it, they live in St cloud so I live with them and my dad pay’s the tuition. I help out with what I can and I work for my personal needs
Ibrahim- It’s good to be independent
Anushree- not really, I miss not having to worry about every small detail
Ibrahim- We all do but yet, welcome to the world of adults ( laugh )
Ibrahim- I’ve noticed your English is amazing, did you learn it when you came to the US or before that ?
Anushree- Before when i was in Bangladish, English in our country as far as my generation is concerned is a basic need for today’s world. And it’s spoken in most places in Bangladesh
Ibrahim- What is your favorite sport and team ?
Anushree- I love to watch cricket as have been watching this sport since
childhood. Team Bangladesh is whom i love but I’m not very into sports anyway so I guess I follow the crowd

Ibrahim- What do you think about the American security procedures against Internationals ? and how would you describe it ?
Anushree- I think it mostly fair, America have the right to protect its people but not too harsh.
Ibrahim- What are the main religions in your country and how are they being practiced ?
Anushree- Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs. they are being practiced without any difficulty, I think people there have learned to live with each other in harmony although Bangladesh’s population is mostly Muslims
Ibrahim- That’s good to hear, al last we reached our final question, What did you find in the US in which you never expected to find ?
Anushree- The education system is really good here compared to back home. the amount of pressure is not the same like how it is back home. I feel I can learn more here than I would over there
Ibrahim- well, thank you very much for your patience, I do relize that you have an appointment that you have to attend to and I’m sorry if I delayed you
Anushree- don’t mention it, I’m sorry if I didn’t answer your questions as you expected
Ibrahim- your answers were satisfying enough
Country report
Bangladesh is a southern Asian country, slightly smaller than the state of Iowa and bordering the bay of Bengal . Throughout my researching in the web I have learned many insightful information about the country, mostly from CIA Factbook. From reading in CIA fact book I have learned the followings. It is know that the European trading centre begun to spreading in the 16th century. Bangladesh have suffered afterwards from the the domination of the British Empire and become a part of what used to be known at the time by (British India ). Many years after that and specifically in 1947. West Pakistan and East Bengal have established a new Islamic country of their own due to that they are both mainly Islamic and India was mostly Hindus. As a result of the sepration, a new country was born and given the of Pakistan. East Bengal was named after that East Pakistan. The newborn country were having problems with the unsatisfied East pakistanians ( now Bangladeshians ) of their political and therefore have decided to separate from Pakistan and then give themselves the name of Bengaldesh ( wich mean in the local language the land of Bengal )after The country gained it’s independence in 1971 .
the political system of Banladesh is parliamentary democracy, it means that the the party with the most seats in the parliament get to be the form of government. The current president isZillur Rahman and he had been the president since 12, February, 2009. The country is divided into 7 adminstrative regions or states, which are Dhaka, Barisal, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sylhet. The capital city of Bangladesh is Dhaka wih a population of approximately 7 million people. the country’s whole population is more than 160 million people. that significantly huge number of population in a country that is a little bit smaller than the size of Iowa have created numerous issues in the country. People under poverty line especially in rural areas of the country were not too long ago about 85 per cent. One of the things that helped contributing negativally to the poverty issue is the unfair distribution of resources on the people. it is noticeable that corruption and poverty are two main problems in Bangladesh people are still suffering from until this day
Bangladesh is considered by many the cradle of many civilizations and enjoys its own individual characteristics regarding culture, religions, languages, etiquettes, ways of communication, food and costumes. The most first language is Bangla and it’s the official language. It’s spoken by nearly 95% of the population followed by Urdu and then English. The country also have a variety of religion most known are three which are Islam, Hinduism and Buddasim. The country is Islamic-based but any religion is free to practice his believes. there are also a very small percentage of Christianity as a result of the missionaries in the 17th century. In addition, there are a deference in ways of communication between Bengalis and western countries. In Bangladesh, it is considered rude if you are having a conversation with a person and look him directly in the eyes while doing so, while in America a person may raise doubt about what he is saying if he decided to not look his partner in the conversation directly in the eye. Mostly it is a sign of respect if you are talking to someone and look in the ground as it shows humble. Other than the deference in ways of communication, Bangladesh in known -along with most of the eastern Asian countries – for their taste of spicy food. The country is famous for their delicious chicken carry dish ( chicken cooked with special hot Asian spices and eaten with bread ).
